Developer Comment: We're pretty happy with how Chromie's rework is playing, though there is a small amount of space to buff her up overall (even with the understanding that her winrate will go up as players get used to her new playstyle). We're trying to give a small buff to her base kit, while also balancing out a few of the Talent tiers. In particular, we're changing Blessing of the Bronze to be an activated ability, so that opponents have greater counterplay. Chromie (and the community) saw this one coming, so we were ready to pull the trigger quickly on this change.

Developer Comment: As we promised in the past, we took a look at the overall Mana tension of all the Heroes in the game. We also have some philosophies about Mana that we want to keep going forward. They are:

  1. Mana should be a meaningful part of the game, particularly in the early stages when wave clear is at a higher premium. We believe that as the game progresses, Mana tension should become less important as Heroes gain more base Mana and the game's focus shifts to team fighting.
  2. Mana tension doesn't have to be the same for every Hero, but every Hero should feel it to some degree, otherwise it serves no purpose.
  3. We like that some talents heavily mitigate Mana tension.

When we took a look at Mana tension in the game, we saw that, overall, things are in a fairly healthy spot, but could be fine-tuned and improved upon. We like the tension that the heroes who are closer to the middle of the spectrum have, with some examples being Malfurion, Tychus, and E.T.C. Our goal with these changes is to bring the outliers closer to the center. We are open to your feedback going forward if you think that the game needs to be stricter or more lenient in this area, or if you believe there are any outliers that we missed.

Developer Comment: Our goal with this Chromie update is to create various degrees of success that Chromie can enjoy, so that she doesn't feel like quite the same all-or-nothing mage that she's historically been. Traditionally, Chromie has often required a hard counter to keep her in check or completely wrecked an opposing team, creating polarizing experiences. We're instituting a lot of changes that allow Chromie to get partial success with her Abilities (multiple Sand Blasts baseline, 3 blasts of Dragon's Breath), while also widening her toolkit (friendly Stasis, Basic Attack damage, PvE damage). While we're diversifying her kit, we also want to make sure that Chromie feels special, and we think that her Sand Echoes and predictive gameplay with Dragon's Breath are still unique parts of her that embody the feeling of artillery mage while still having moments of counter play for opponents.

Developer Comment: We're making a few changes to Chromie to reduce the frustration when playing against her and to reduce her wide power variance between games. A number of these changes are designed to increase counter-play when playing against Chromie, like reducing her range on her abilities and letting enemies see Dragon's Breath shortly after it has been cast. In exchange, Chromie's Sand Blast has a shorter cast time, and she will now have a modified version of Bronze Talons baseline, where she can weave in auto- attacks for hitting enemy Heroes with her abilities. The reason we decided to give her the additional Bronze Talons trait is so that Chromie players are encouraged to interact more with their opponents. We're rewarding them for getting into more dangerous positions with the possibility of increased damage output. This also lets us redistribute her damage away from her high burst, long range abilities, and more into something her opponents have a better opportunity to play around. We like Chromie's unique place in our game as a long-range, artillery mage that requires enemies to pay attention to their positioning but over time we found that she simply had too much range and burst for players to feel like they had an engaging experience when playing against her. While we've had a blast with these changes, we'll continue to keep an eye on her going forward and are prepared to make additional tweaks as needed.

Developer Comment: Only about 40% of Chromie players were unlocking the echo over the course of a game, and among players that did it was occurring later than we’d like. By reducing the requirements for completing Chromie’s quest, we won’t increase her late game power at all, but make her output a little more consistent.

    • Loophole (R)
      • Removed.
    • (New) Stuck in a Loop (R)
      • Temporal Loop teleports the target a second time after the first completes.

Developer Comment: Chromie's baseline Quest on Sand Blast is designed to balance hitting a lot of Heroes with precision. We've reduced the damage of Sand Blast to move more of that into the Quest, so that there can be a greater variance between the performance of an okay Chromie player and a great Chromie player. We removed Piercing Sands because we felt that the longer Chromie's range gets, the less interactive Chromie can be for enemies, and replaced it with a Talent with a little more interesting gameplay.

      • Added Functionality:
        • You can now also activate this Talent to reveal an area for 2 seconds. Enemies seen are revealed for 4 seconds.
    • Peer Into the Future (Active)
      • Removed

Developer Comments: We’re looking to add more power to Chromie that fits the flavor of the character, without increasing her burst potential across the entirety of the game. We’re also combining the effects of Timewalker’s Pursuit and Peer Into the Future to create an enticing option at Level 1.

  • Base maximum Health increased from 1260 to 1323
  • Health regen increased from 2.63 to 2.76

Abilities

  • Sand Blast (Q)
    • Range increased by 6%
  • Dragon's Breath (W)

    • Range decreased by 8%

Talents

  • Level 13
    • Reaching Through Time (Passive)
      • Range bonus decreased from 25 to 15%

Developer Comments: Reaching Through Time had a dominating pick rate, for good reason. We’re taking a little bit of that range from the Talent and adding it baseline. While we’re at it, we’re reducing the range on Temporal Loop slightly to require Chromie to put herself more at risk. Temporal Loop isn’t overpowered per se, but the majority of the counterplay required specific Heroes (Medivh, Auriel, Uther) or Cleanse. We’re also buffing her Health so that the sum total of all these changes will result in an improvement to her winrate, since she is slightly less powerful than what we’d like to see.

2016-07-27 Balance Update

    • Mana cost reduced from 4 to 2 per second
    • Slow increased from 50% after 5 seconds, to 60% after 3 seconds

Talents

  • Level 7

      • Cooldown and Mana cost reduction increased from 40% to 50%
    • Chrono Sickness (E)
      • Slow duration increased from 3 to 4 seconds
      • Now also reduces the Mana cost of Time Trap by 50%
  • Level 20
    • Pocket of Time (R)
      • Slow increased from 70% to 80%
    • Past and Future Me (Passive)
      • Damage reduced from 50% to 40%

Developer Comments: We’ve seen Chromie trend upward steadily, and we’re happy to have the little gnome be a scary character in the right circumstances. We don’t really want to make any large overall balance adjustments to her right now, but we do want to make a few of her less picked Talents and Heroic more enticing. We’ll continue to work on more of these as time passes. Don’t worry, Chromie already told us she’s completely balanced a few patches from now.

2016-06-21 Balance Update

Hero Updates

Basic Abilities

  • Time Trap (E)
    • Mana cost reduced from 50 to 25
    • Cast range increased by 50%.
    • Time Trap Base Health increased from 200 to 300.

Developer Comments: We want to play up the strategic positioning that Chromie uses to stay alive. As such, we are making Time Traps less of a Mana drain and increasing their range so Chromie players are encouraged to reposition the traps where it will offer the best benefit. We are also increasing the Health of the traps so that they don’t die as frequently to incidental damage. These buffs will make it easier for Chromie to protect herself from the enemies that she knows are coming…or will know were coming… time dragons are confusing.

    • Cooldown reduced from 3 to 2.5 seconds
  • Dragon’s Breath (W)
    • Damage increased from 440 (+4% per level) to 480 (+4% per level)
    • Cooldown reduced from 14 to 12 seconds

Talents

  • Level 6
    • Mobius Loop (W)
      • Cooldown reduction decreased from 50% to 40%
    • Chrono Sickness (E)
      • Slow increased from 40% to 50%
  • Level 15
    • Shifting Sands (Q)
      • Ability Power bonus per enemy hit reduced from 10% to 8%
      • Ability Power bonus cap reduced from 50% to 40%
    • Fast Forward (Q)
      • Sand Blast cooldown after hitting from long range reduced from 1 to .75 seconds
    • Quantum Overdrive (Active)
      • Ability Power bonus reduced from 25% to 20%

Developer Comments: A Hero like Chromie is one that we would expect to come out with a lower than normal win rate. She has many counters, has a high skill floor, and requires her teammates to play around her poke style. Even anticipating the gradual increase in effectiveness as people figure her out, we think that she has room for buffs.

Chromie is the type of Hero who has high damage potential (and man, when she hits those home runs they’re a sight to behold), but is also very inconsistent. She’ll always be that way to a degree, which is by design. We’re attempting to buff her damage throughput to offset this inability to pick her targets, without making her “one shot” potential any scarier than it is.

We’ve increased her Health slightly as well so that she is a little more resistant to incidental damage. If enemies find a way to close the gap and focus her down, her still relatively low Health and lack of escapes will allow teams to eliminate our terrifying gnome-dragon, as they should.

2016-05-17 Patch Notes

New Hero

Chromie, Keeper of Time, has been added to Heroes of the Storm and is now available for play! Read on for a brief overview of her Abilities.

Trait

  • Timewalker
    • You’ve traveled into the future, and as such, will learn your Talents 1 level earlier than your teammates.

Basic Abilities

  • Sand Blast (Q)
    • After 1 second, fire a long-range blast that damages the first enemy Hero it hits.
  • Dragon’s Breath (W)
    • Fire a blast into the air that lands after 1.5 seconds, dealing damage to enemies in an area. Enemies cannot see where the blast will land.
  • Time Trap (E)
    • Place a Time Trap that arms and Stealths after 2 seconds. The first enemy Hero to touch it will be placed into Stasis for 2 seconds. Only 1 Trap can exist at once.

Heroic Abilities

  • Slowing Sands (R)
    • Create a swirling vortex of sand which greatly slows enemies caught within its area of effect. The longer Slowing Sands is active, the greater its slow becomes.
  • Temporal Loop (R)
    • Target enemy Hero will be teleported 3 seconds back in time to the position they were in when you initially cast Temporal Loop.
