- Debilitating Flames [W]
Developer Comment: We're happy with the Lord of Terror's ability to wage wanton destruction, but we think he should do so at greater risk to himself. The hits to his survivability may be too heavy handed, in which case we are ready to grovel for Diablo's forgiveness and resolve it with our next update. While we're here, we had an excuse to tune up Fire Stomp's later tier talents.
Hero Updates
Talents
- Level 7
- Eternal Flames [W]
- Additional functionality: Reduce the cooldown of Fire Stomp by 1 second.
- Mana return when Stunning enemy Heroes with Shadow Charge or Overpower increased from 35 to 45.

- Hellfire [W]

- Maximum stacks for bonus damage per second to nearby enemies reduced from 15 to 10.
- Hellfire [W]
Developer Comment: Diablo has recently risen in the ranks to once again being a high demand Warrior for his team. Overall, his talents are in a fairly good place, but we want to fix a design issue where Diabolical Momentum is simply too good at doing everything since it has synergy with all of his other potential ways of playing. To reduce its power and help his Level 7 tier be more diverse, we're removing its ability to reduce the cooldown of Fire Stomp and giving Eternal Flames a boost in its role as a key talent for players who want to build around the ability.
Hero Updates

Abilities
- Devastating Charge [Q]
- Damage when hitting enemies into terrain increased from 120 to 130.
Talents
- Level 7
- Diabolical Momentum [Passive]
- Cooldown reduction increased from 1.25 to 1.5 seconds.
- Diabolical Momentum [Passive]
Developer Comment: Since we changed Devastating Charge Diablo has fallen off a bit. While we believe he's in a more healthy spot overall, we understand how players miss the unique role he had as a tank who had the ability to burst down enemies who are out of position. We're giving a little bit of that back in the form of a baseline buff to Shadow charge so that he can have some of that fantasy back no matter how players choose to build him.
Hero Updates
Talents
- Level 4
- Sacrificial Soul [Q]
- Souls gained from Stunning an enemy Hero with Shadow Charge increased from 5 to 10.
- Sacrificial Soul [Q]

Abilities
- Black Soulstone [Trait]
- Bonus Health reduced from 0.4% to 0.3% per Soul.
Talents
- Level 10
- Apocalypse [R1]
- Mana cost reduced from 100 to 50.
- Apocalypse [R1]
Developer Comment: Diablo, surprisingly, is one of the lowest winning Heroes in the game. That doesn't mean that he's not extremely powerful at times or unpopular, so we don't feel the need to make drastic changes right now. However, we are making a few small adjustments to make him better when he's behind in a game by increasing his Health until he's around 75 Souls. To allow Diablo to more commonly attempt to land his entire combo with Apocalypse, we're reducing the Mana cost. Interestingly, Apocalypse is chosen a lot more often, but is actually a 5% lower win rate, so we want to make the Heroic win more without drastically shifting the perception of its power.
Hero Updates
Talents

- Eternal Flames [W]
- Additional functionality: Also refunds 35 Mana when Stunning enemy Heroes with Shadow Charge or Overpower.
- Diabolical Momentum [Passive]

- Reward: Hitting enemy Heroes against terrain with Shadow Charge reduces their Armor by 15 for 4 seconds.
- Hellfire [W]
- Additional functionality: When at maximum stacks, Diablo deals 15 damage to nearby enemies.
Developer Comment: We've had a lot of discussion recently on Diablo's place in the meta and what makes him such a consistently popular pick, despite having a low win rate. We love the hero, and believe he's an incredibly fun Warrior to play, but we've heard complaints from players about his burst potential, and we agree that it can be a bit much to be killed in a double Shadow Charge combo post 16. To help free up other options on his 13 and 16 tiers and to address issues with his burst, we are changing Devastating Charge to be a little less about his own burst damage, and more about debuffing his target so that his team can take advantage of his powerful initiation. In addition, we're buffing up his other builds so that they can be more viable compared to the double wall-stun combo that currently dominates his late-game playstyle. We hope that these changes still retain the fun of lining up the perfect Domination combo for those who love the playstyle while also bringing other ways to play him into the forefront.
Hero Updates
Abilities
- Fire Stomp (W)
- Mana cost increased from 30 to 35
Developer Comment: As we promised in the past, we took a look at the overall Mana tension of all the Heroes in the game. We also have some philosophies about Mana that we want to keep going forward. They are:
- Mana should be a meaningful part of the game, particularly in the early stages when wave clear is at a higher premium. We believe that as the game progresses, Mana tension should become less important as Heroes gain more base Mana and the game's focus shifts to team fighting.
- Mana tension doesn't have to be the same for every Hero, but every Hero should feel it to some degree, otherwise it serves no purpose.
- We like that some talents heavily mitigate Mana tension.
When we took a look at Mana tension in the game, we saw that, overall, things are in a fairly healthy spot, but could be fine-tuned and improved upon. We like the tension that the heroes who are closer to the middle of the spectrum have, with some examples being Malfurion, Tychus, and E.T.C. Our goal with these changes is to bring the outliers closer to the center. We are open to your feedback going forward if you think that the game needs to be stricter or more lenient in this area, or if you believe there are any outliers that we missed.
Hero Updates
Abilities
- Shadow Charge (Q)
- Cooldown increased from 12 to 13 seconds
- Overpower (E)
- Cooldown increased from 12 to 13 seconds
Developer Comment: Diablo, while not winning outside of our normally acceptable bounds, is banned a disproportionate amount compared to other heroes in the game. We're slightly reducing how available his combo is so that enemy players have a larger window of time to take advantage of his threatening abilities being on cooldown.

- Armor increased from 20 to 25
- Armor at max Souls increased from 40 to 50

Developer Comment: Diablo is underperforming since his recent rework, so we've increased his baseline survivability. We expect him to rise as players settle into new builds and playstyles, but there was still room to buff the Lord of Terror. We've also addressed a few of the Talents that weren't as strong as their counterparts. Additionally, we've reduced the duration of Feast on Fear, but increased its healing per tick, so Diablo players can get more value out of a few healing ticks before overriding it.
Bug Fixes
- Diablo: Lightning Breath's visual effects can no longer be right-clicked.
- Diablo: The visual effects that display within Diablo's Hero ring after he has collected 100 Souls will no longer appear underneath Vehicles that Diablo is piloting, such as the Dragon Knight.

Developer Comment: Diablo's update aims to give the Lord of Terror more control over his kit and add fun new gameplay without compromising his core identity in the Nexus. We're putting the power in the hands of Diablo players by allowing them to target their Fire Stomps and allowing multiple fire waves to hit the same Hero to help execute the perfect combo. We're adding self- healing to Fire Stomp so that Diablo has a way to maintain his health beyond relying on a Support to heal him. Shadow Charge now grants increased Movement Speed to reduce situations where enemies are just beyond Overpower's reach after charging in. Diablo's level 4 Talents all allow him to collect souls in new ways, so he can still get the most out of his Trait during low takedown games. There is also a spiderweb of fun synergies and interactions between the Talents in his tree, so we're excited to see what creative combinations players will latch onto.

Developer Comments: It's been nice to see the positive reactions to the Lord of Terror's recent changes. That said, the latest rework gave him some new survivability talents that are slightly over-performing. The new stacking Resistant system is making the interaction between Shadow Charge, Bulwark and Soul Shield a bit too strong, so we are making some adjustments to compensate.

Developer Comments: The Lord of Terror has been under the knife for a couple months and has finally collected enough souls to resurrect himself. He reenters the Nexus with an updated talent tree focusing on maintaining and amplifying his identity. He should still excel as a gank-oriented Warrior, punishing out-of-position enemies, but also brings along some new survivability options. While we had to lower his damage slightly, the baseline addition of Firestorm and larger payoff for Shadow Charging enemies into collision should heavily reward opportunistic Diablo players.

Hero Updates
Stats
- Diablo's Basic Attack has received responsiveness improvements
Bug Fixes
- Spell Shield: A cooldown timer will now properly appear when Spell Shield’s effects are triggered in the same moment that the Talent was activated.
Bug Fixes
- Damage Reduction: When two damage reduction effects, such as Resistant (25%) and Hardened Shield (75%), are simultaneously applied to a Hero, the larger effect will no longer be overridden by the lesser effect.
Bug Fixes
- Diablo: It is no longer possible to cast Overpower on Heroic Vehicles, such as the Garden Terror or Dragon Knight.
Talents
Imposing Presence (Active)
- New functionality:
- Heroes that attack you have their Attack Speed slowed by 20% for 2.5 seconds
- Activate to Slow the Attack Speed of nearby Heroes and Summons by 50% and Slow their Movement Speed by 20% for 2.5 seconds
Developer Comments: We did not like the power of the Attack Speed slow for Imposing Presence given how little counter-play there is. We’ve decided to move some power out of the passive portion of the Talent and give it a new activated effect in order to create some bigger moments for players who choose to take it.
Spell Shield (Passive)
- Added functionality:
- Spell Shield can now be toggled on or off to allow for better control of which Abilities you want to mitigate
Hero Updates
Talents
- Level 7
- Devastating Charge (Q)
- New functionality:
- Shadow Charge grants Resistant, reducing all damage taken by 25% for 4 seconds.
- New functionality:
- Devastating Charge (Q)
Developer Comments: We’re removing the majority of our old Relentless- like Talents from the game, because we found that it wasn’t clear to the enemy team what was happening. Reducing the duration on very short disabling effects to begin with was hard to notice, and typically felt like a bug when it did happen. In some cases, we’re replacing these Talents with Hero specific ones that more clearly convey what’s happening, while fitting the gameplay of the Hero.
Bug Fixes
- Diablo: Apocalypse will now correctly target enemies trapped by Anub'arak’s Cocoon.
- Diablo: Overpower’s target will no longer be stunned for the Ability’s full duration if Diablo is interrupted by a knockback at the same time Overpower is cast.
Bug Fixes
- Greymane: Will no longer become stuck if Darkflight is interrupted by Diablo’s Shadow Charge or Stitches’ Hook.
Talents
Relentless
- Relentless and similar Hero-specific Talents will now only reduce the duration of Slows, Stuns and Roots. Silence effects will no longer be reduced by this talent.
Developer Comments: With an increasing number of CC effects entering the Nexus we found ourselves constantly asking ourselves “Should Relentless work against this?” which quickly turned into a rabbit hole of ‘what-ifs’ and ‘how comes’. We agreed that the talent was going to continue to become stronger as we moved forward and decided to limit the number of effects that it can reduce.
Bug Fixes
- Fixed an issue in which Diablo’s Shadow Charge could Stun Unstoppable targets in certain circumstances.
Talents
Battle Momentum
- Battle Momentum has been made Hero-specific, and now only applies to Basic Ability cooldowns.
- Diablo
- Diabolical Momentum
- Basic Attacks now reduce Basic Ability cooldowns by 0.75 seconds instead of 0.5.

- Lunar Momentum
- Zagara
- Swarm Momentum
- Basic Attacks now reduce Basic Ability cooldowns by 0.75 seconds instead of 0.5.
- No longer reduces Heroic Ability or Trait cooldowns.
- Swarm Momentum
Developer Comments: Our intention for Battle Momentum was to create more active gameplay by using your Basic Abilities more often, but we found that a lot of this Talent’s power lied in its ability to reduce your Heroic cooldowns. We wanted to increase the cooldown reduction granted by the Talent, but didn’t want Heroic Ability cooldowns to drop to absurdly low levels. By making it only reduce the cooldowns of Basic Abilities (Q, W, E), it allowed us to increase this cooldown reduction without making it overpowered. We’ve also made Battle Momentum Hero-specific, so that we can tune each one without affecting all the rest, since Attack Speed, melee versus range, and the nature of your Basic Abilities can all drastically change what is balanced.
Hero Updates
- Shadow Charge (Q)
- The implementation for this Ability has been reworked.
- No longer automatically Stuns the target at the end of the knockback phase, and instead applies a Daze for the duration of the knockback.
- Targets that collide with terrain will still be stunned for 1 second.
- Diablo will now continue travelling toward the enemy target for the duration of the knockback phase.
- No longer automatically Stuns the target at the end of the knockback phase, and instead applies a Daze for the duration of the knockback.
- The implementation for this Ability has been reworked.
- Apocalypse (R)
- Stun duration reduced from 2 to 1.75 seconds.
Developer Comments: Shadow Charge seems like a really simple Ability, but on the backend there were a lot of technical manipulations to make everything work the way they were intended. These were starting to create odd gameplay and bugs, so we’ve simplified the design of the Ability so that Diablo travels right alongside his victim as they are knocked back, instead of walking really fast toward them.
Additionally, we’ve received a lot of feedback from players regarding the popular strategy of chaining movement impairing effects, like Stuns and Roots, on an enemy Hero. While we want this to be a viable way to play, we feel it’s currently too prominent and powerful at higher levels of play. As a result, we are reducing the duration of many of these effects in the game. In scenarios where this change nerfs a character we don’t otherwise want to nerf, we’re coupling it with a buff to help offset the difference. While this change hasn’t reduced all effects that might make you lose control of your Hero, we feel these are some of the more egregious ones. As always, we will make further changes if necessary.
Talents
Block
- Damage reduction increased from 50% to 75%
Developer Comments: We want to improve counter-pick talents like Block that are meant to be strong against certain hero types. We’re hoping that these kinds of Talents will have a more meaningful impact in games in which they are picked, and that there are more situations where the enemy team’s composition drives intelligent Talent choices.
Other effects similar to Block have been evaluated on a case-by-case basis for all Heroes, with some gaining increased Block damage reduction, while others stayed at 50%.
Hero Updates
- Fire Stomp (W)
- Fire Devil (Talent)
- Damage reduced from 23 (+4% per level) to 17 (+4% per level)
- Fire Devil (Talent)
Developer Comments: Diablo has hovered near the top of our win rate charts for a while. We wanted to see how the Tyrande nerfs would impact him first, as we know those characters have very strong synergy together. We haven’t seen much of a dip in Diablo’s win rate, so we’re targeting a ‘must pick’ Talent with this nerf.
Design & Gameplay
Battleground Monsters
- Battleground-specific creatures are now universally defined as Monsters (ex: Neutral Garden Terrors, Sky Temple Guardians, etc.)
- Several Talents and Abilities have been changed to reflect this new categorization, and the following no longer affect Monsters:
- Mercenary Lord
- Johanna's Knight Takes Pawn
- Lunara's Cruel Bloom
- Rexxar's Easy Prey and Bird of Prey
- The Butcher's Chop Meat
- The following now affect Monsters:
- Anub'arak's Beetle, Juiced
- Azmodan's Demonic Smite
- Several Talents that could previously trigger against both captured Mercenaries and Minions will now only affect Minions (ex: Seasoned Marksman, Black Soulstone, etc.)
General
- Damage dealt by splash and cleave attacks will no longer trigger effects that would otherwise require a direct attack to trigger (ex: Block, Spell Shield, Imposing Presence, etc.)
Talents
Block
- Block charges are now tracked in the buff bar next to the Hero portrait, and a timer has been added to show the time remaining until a new charge is generated.
Bug Fixes
- Heroes that are simultaneously struck by Diablo’s Overpower and Stitches’ Hook will no longer be thrown outside the playable area.
Design & Gameplay
Summoned Unit Attacks
- Summoned unit Basic Attacks will now miss if that Summon is Blinded or the target is Evading.
- Summoned unit Basic Attacks will no longer consume Block Talent stacks.
Hero Updates

- Maximum Health gained per Soul increased from 0.15% to 0.2%

- Now reduces movement impairing effects for 6 seconds, up from 3 seconds
- Fire Stomp (W)
- Damage increased from 30 (+9 per level) to 33 (+10 per level)
- Mana cost decreased from 50 to 40
- Overpower (E)
- Domination (Talent)
- Cooldown reduction for Shadow Charge increased from 8 to 10 seconds
- Domination (Talent)
Developer Comments: The buffs to Shadow Charge should help to reinforce Diablo as the premier gank Warrior. The rest of his kit gets a little bit of love to help his overall play.
Talents
Bolt of the Storm
Developer Comments: We love this talent and think it can create a lot of really interesting moments, but the cooldown was just too short. At 70 seconds we think this talent is still a great level 20 pick, but now players will have to be more strategic with how they use it. Forcing someone to use their Bolt to avoid a gank can now be a meaningful moment with this increased cooldown. We hope this also entices players towards choosing their Heroic upgrades instead of Bolt when the situation calls for it.
- Cooldown increased from 40 to 70 seconds
Imposing Presence
Developer Comments: Statistically, it was almost never wrong to choose Imposing Presence. With this nerf, it’s still a great counter in the right situation, and as a result, we’re hoping we’ll see more play from our Basic Attack assassins.
- Attack Speed slow reduced from 50% to 40%
- The Attack Speed slow will now be removed when attacking a target that has not learned the Imposing Presence Talent
Bug Fixes
- Fixed an issue in which the following Abilities and Talents were not damaging or destroying Zagara's Creep Tumors:
- Brightwing's Peekaboo, Diablo's Firestorm (returning fireballs), Johanna's Blessed Hammer, Leoric's Buried Alive, Nova's Railgun, Sgt. Hammer's Napalm Strike (impact damage) and Tychus' Big Red Button (the nuke portion)
Bug Fixes

- Resolved an additional issue that could cause Heroes affected by Diablo’s Overpower to fly outside the Battleground’s playable area.
Talents
Spell Shield
- Duration increased from 2 to 3 seconds
Bug Fixes
- Diablo’s Fire Stomp can now properly damage and reveal Zagara’s Creep Tumors.
